Fungi

Nearly 3,000 species of fungi are known to occur in Iceland. Approximately one-third are either lichen-forming fungi or fungi living on lichens (lichenicolous fungi). There are around 770 species of Basidiomycota in Iceland. Known Ascomycota species in Iceland number around 960, including the anamorphic fungi. Smaller numbers of species have been found in Iceland belonging to other groups (i.e. Blastocladiomycota (9), Olpidiomycota (6), Entomophthoromycota (18), Zoopagomycota (1), Mucoromycota (41), and Chytridiomycota (83).
