The Act on the Icelandic Institute of Natural History No. 60/1992 charges the IINH with disseminating knowledge of Icelandic nature to schools, the media and the public at large. The IINH fulfils its commitment to scientific outreach and education through publishing and library activities, online outreach projects (including this website) and a variety of community and school programmes.
The demand for ready access to information grows every year. Our society requires reliable scientific data on which to base decisions on sensible land use, sustainable development and conservation. Government ministries, other public institutions, municipalities, private companies, students and the general public all make use of data on nature and the environment.
Materials that the IINH prepares and disseminates include distribution maps for plants and animals, data on the conservation status of species, vegetation maps, habitat type maps, geothermal and geological maps, data on landslides and associated risks and data on sustainable harvest.
