Quarries

Quarrying of aggregate materials, both rock and sediment, is an important industry in Iceland, since aggregates are needed for a wide range of building and road construction projects. Aggregate production in the vicinity of urban areas ramped up considerably in the mid-twentieth century, when heavy machinery began to be imported to Iceland. Aggregates are used for roads and highways, harbours, dams, landfill, and filler around the foundations of buildings, and for concrete production. Other important uses of aggregates include seawalls and floodwalls for rivers, diversion canals, and reservoirs.
