The Collections and Systematics Department provides a platform for fundamental research in the fields of mineralogy, palaeontology, systematics, molecular biology, and geological mapping. It offers consultancy and other services for the general public, institutions, and businesses, for example regarding the conservation of natural heritage sites and identification of insect pests and mould species. Pollen monitoring is also a department responsibility.
The Collections and Systematics Department has two locations: Garðabær and Akureyri. It is responsible for the management and computer cataloguing of the scientific collections at both locations and the drill core collection at Breiðdalsvík. The department also assists in the acquisition of natural artefacts for display and research purposes and arranges temporary loans of items from the IINH’s own collections (see Loans Policy).
